ATI’s big push, with the introduction of their 5000 series of graphics cards, was to create Eyefinity, which allows end users to easily create hugely expansive display setups from just one or two graphics cards. NVIDIA took a different tack, and really started to push 3D – now they’re coming around with their new Vision surround technology. It’s 3D, but across multiple monitors.
